I am writing this post in Early February 2017 and sharing, especially for those of you that have had a slow and perhaps shaky start to 2017.
I think we all naturally enter a new year with high hopes and ambitions for the year.
This is now compunded by the hudres of messagews that we’re bombarded with on social media encouraging us to have the BEST YEAR EVER and encouraging you to ‘smash your goals in 2017’.
I think that we do naturally, at the start of a new year, think, ‘Yes! This is the year I am going to achieve lots and see my ambitions come to life. My breakthrough is coming!’
Then we get into the year and sometimes the reality does not match up to our expectations.
Personally, I have had a slow start to the year becaue every member of my family has been ill!
We also had a couple of birthdays, which were lovely distractions but distractions nonetheless. And to top it off, I have injured my foot and some days haven’t even been able to hobble off the sofa.
All in all, for various reasons, my year has started slowly!
Take Some Time To Reflect On January
I have started to notice in the past couple of days people posting on social media “The 1st of February is my new year” and “I’m starting my year afresh” because January hasn’t gone as well as they would have liked it to.
If you are in this position, as I am, there’s one really important thing that we all have to do and that is to take time to reflect on January and to learn from what happened.
Take some time to reflect on what went well, what didn’t go well and also take some time to record the key metrics for your business.
Know and Track Your Numbers
If you’re not doing this already, then please, please, please(!) if you take nothing else away from this post, make sure that you are recording the key numbers for your business on a monthly basis.
The numbers that you track will be different depending on your business. Income and expenditure are key numbers for any business. For my business, I track number of visitors to my website, how long they have stayed on the website, the number of followers I have on social media and the amount of interaction I had with my followers.
You might want to track things like the number of enquiries that you get each month and the number of enquries that convert into sales.
Whatever the numbers are, you have to take some time to write them down every month so that you can track the progress of your business and see how well (or otherwise) you are doing. This will allow you to build up a picture of your progress over the year and also allow you to compare year to year.
If you are not doing this already and you feel daunted by it, drop me an email nicola (@) nicolasemple.com and I will send you the spreadsheet that I use to track key metrics for my business.
You may need to alter it for the needs of your business but it will give you a starting point.
Learn From What Has Happened
Not ever month ( or even year) in business is going to be a success. If you have had a shaky month, the one thing that you absolutely need to do is think about what you have learned from it.
When things go really well we often don’t take the time to think about what we have learned. When things go badly, we often want to forget about it and move and rarely think about what we have learned from that experience.
I also want you to consider what you are going to do differently as a result of that learning. Then, look forward to February and then into the rest of the year.
Don’t let one shaky month make you feel as though the rest of 2017 is going to be the same because that is absolutely not the case.
You can press the reset button, draw a link in the sand, start again and look towards the rest of the year with a much more positive outlook. And with the reassurance that you have got a bit more learning and a bit more experience under you belt to help you build your brilliant business.
